Romania still has more to do says EU

@ 06:12 PM (38 months, 2 days ago)
The European Union has failed to come to a conclusion on whether to allow Romania and Bulgaria to enter on 1 January 2007 or delay entry until 2008. Instead the European Commission will review the situation by October.  European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso said Romania needs to “demonstrate further results” in the fight against corruption, investigations into graft and implementation of judicial reform.

The following problem areas where flagged:
  • Agriculture: to improve the organisational infrastructure of agencies which hand out EU payments to allow villages and farms to take advantage of the EU's Common Agricultural Policy
  • Anti-Corruption: to implement plans for an impartial, transparent and efficient judiciary that actually convicts criminals
  • Fund management: For Romania to manage EU funds with more stringency and to access the funds to ensure they reach the people who need them
  • Tax structure:to have an IT system operable with the rest of the European Union to allow the correct collection of VAT through the EU's internal market
  • Food safety:to ensure food from farm to table is kept in the safest of circumstances, especially considering the threat of bird flu and its recent outbreak in Romania.

But I could have told you all that (and more)!!! biggrin
